Glossary

API Gravity: A measure of the density of liquid petroleum established by the American Petroleum Institute (API), used to commercially differentiate between types of crude oil. Less dense (or "lighter") oils have higher API gravity values. The classification of crude oil by density is not globally standardized. In Brazil, the Technical Regulation on Petroleum and Natural Gas Reserves, issued by the Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), adopts the following classification: Light crude oil: Y = 0.87 (°API = 31.1); Medium crude oil: 0.87 < Y = 0.92 (22.3 = °API < 31.1); Heavy crude oil: 0.92 < Y = 1.00 (10° < °API = 22°); Extra-heavy crude oil: Y> 1.00 (°API < 10°) (Source: Portuguese Language Oil Dictionary)
